Carolyn Beyersdorf, IIDA of Decorating Den Interiors builds a blend of her professional expertise and customers’ personal tastes

For over 45 years, Decorating Den Interiors has been redesigning homes and businesses across the country, but locally, Carolyn Beyersdorf purchased a franchise going on four years ago.

As a franchise owner, Carolyn represents more than 85 suppliers of home furniture, accessories, lighting, floor and wall coverings, and window treatments. First visits — “consultations” — are complimentary for prospective clients and conducted in the home or at the office.

Because Carolyn has done interior design for more than 30 years, the franchise is a perfect fit. She has an associate’s degree in interior design and business from Davis College and classes from the University of Toledo. Initially, it was a mixture of architecture and commercial interiors that drew her interest.

“I just always had a passion for art, wanting to make spaces more functional and aesthetically pleasing,” said Carolyn.

Her professional experience varied, from designing corporate offices to higher education facilities.

In later years, “I had gone into sales for a commercial furniture company, was displaced, and so I had done some retail in the interim … and it just wasn’t right for me. I knew I needed to get back into my passion, which was design. That’s when I looked at the franchise opportunity. The model helped me make the decision: it’s now or never,” Carolyn said.

The franchise took. The support network of corporate staffers helped, Carolyn notes, but so too did the manufacturers Decorating Den Interiors opened up to her. That access gave her more buying power than she otherwise might have had.

On the corporate or institutional level, Carolyn has worked on everything from the expansive Toledo Mud Hens Fifth Third Ballpark, to small doctors’ offices, the Sylvania Senior Center, to religious structures. Yet with Decorating Den Interiors, Carolyn has also stepped outside her initial box. Nowadays, she works with residential projects in addition to her corporate background, opening up a whole new arena in which to practice her interior design.

“I can do a project as small as one window treatment, a complete room or an entire home. It really just depends on what the client is asking for and what their needs are. It’s a blend of my expertise, the customer’s taste and the latest design trends, all within budget,” Carolyn said.

Decorating Den Interiors is currently running a special of 20 percent off select seating upholstered lines, until the end of June. Carolyn is also offering a Color Trends Workshop on April 16, 2015 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at Lakeside Interior Contractors. RSVPs are necessary for those interested.

Show your support for local businesses! Call Carolyn at 419-345-7069; email her at; or see Carolyn by appointment.

Designers Help Students Get More Vibrant Learning Space

Excerpts from The Catholic Chronicle:

TOLEDO—Students in kindergarten at Central City Ministry of Toledo’s Queen of Apostles campus are enjoying a refurbished classroom thanks to the efforts of some generous volunteers.

The students now have a more vibrant and engaging learning environment with new paint, carpet tile and a three-dimensional wall mural.

The volunteers who lent their hands to the effort did so as a Green Apple Day of Service project. The Green Apple Day of Service was launched by the United States’ Green Building Council’s Center for Green Schools in 2012 as a global volunteer effort. The day of service gives parents, teachers, students, companies and local organizations the opportunity to transform schools into healthy, safe and productive learning environments through local service projects.

Interface, a global manufacturer of modular carpet and a strategic sponsor of the Green Apple Day of Service, partners with chapters of the International Interior Design Association to bring design resources to local communities.

Carolyn Beyersdorf of Decorating Den Interiors summed up the feelings of all the volunteers by saying, “It was our pleasure working with you and your staff! The positive benefits are apparent upon entering the room and will lift the spirits of everyone entering the space, whether to work or to welcome students and parents. It was fun to work with everyone, especially the kindergarten children the morning we created the mural. They are little treasures waiting to learn and explore the world around them! Thank you for the opportunity to brighten the world of your staff, children, and parents.”

From The Sylvania Advantage

Sylvanian opens Decorating Den office

Sylvania resident Carolyn Beyersdorf, IIDA, has recently established an office for her franchise of Decorating Den Interiors with another Decorating Den representative, Hilary Hinz. The two independent designers have leased space at 6910 Airport Hwy. “We have a small office enabling us to share resources and to maintain a library of materials including fabric samples and much more,” decorator Carolyn Beyersdorf, IIDA, said. “As Decorating Den franchise owners, we go to our clients’ homes or offices rather than having our clients visit us in our office.” Beyersdorf is one of nearly 400 owners of the 45-year-old Easton, Maryland-based company. “I really like the national exposure the company offers,” Beyersdorf noted. “As part of North America’s largest home furnishings and interior design franchise company, we work with more than 85 home furnishings companies.” Beyersdorf stated she has access to everything for the home or office from window treatments to furniture, accessories, lighting, wall, floor and bed coverings. She works with clients throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. “I offer complimentary design services and am happy to help my client make their design selections in the convenience of their homes or offices.” Beyersdorf is a member of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and is certified by the National Council of Interior Design Qualification. She has more than 27 years of interior design experience with special emphasis on commercial design for corporate and higher education facilities as well as residential interiors. I enjoy working in both areas and my biggest joy is fulfilling the needs of my client,” Beyersdorf noted. “I can help with everything from small projects such as one window treatment to the entire room or the entire home to help my client’s dream happen. Some people chose to not use an interior designer for economic reasons. However, I can save people money by avoiding costly mistakes.” “It’s important to establish a budget up front to meet client expectations,” she added. Most recently, Beyersdorf had the opportunity to help with the redesign of the Sylvania Senior Center, a project she also designed when the center was built. “It was great fun to do the same space for the second time. I enjoyed the challenge of creating a new look using the same color palette,” she said. Beyersdorf is also available to speak to groups about all aspects of design from color to the latest furniture and window treatment trends. More information is available at
